Day 11: The Second Sign (John 4:43–54)

“Jesus said to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off.”

John 4:50 (NASB)

Jesus returns to Galilee and is welcomed — but John notes wryly that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown (4:44). A royal official from Capernaum travels to find Jesus: his son is dying. He begs Jesus to come down before his child dies. Jesus's response has a sting: 'Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.' The official is not interested in an argument about faith. His son is dying. 'Sir, come down before my child dies.'

Jesus does not go to Capernaum. He says: 'Go; your son will live.' The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went. While he was still on his way, his servants met him with the news that his son was recovering. When he checked the time, it was the seventh hour — the exact moment Jesus had spoken. He himself believed, and all his household. This is the second sign: healing at a distance, by word alone, with no physical contact, no journey required.

The sign reveals something crucial about faith in John's Gospel. The first movement of the official's faith was desperation — 'come before my child dies.' The second movement was trust in the word — he believed Jesus's promise and walked away. The third movement was full family faith — when the sign was confirmed, all his household believed. Faith grows from crisis to trust to community. The second sign also previews the resurrection theme: the son who was near death receives life by the word of Jesus.

For Reflection

  1. The official believed 'the word that Jesus spoke to him' before he saw any evidence. Where in your life is God calling you to trust His word before you see confirmation?
  2. This man's faith spread to his whole household. Who in your circle of influence might come to faith through your encounter with Jesus?
  3. Jesus seemed to push back on sign-based faith. What is the difference between faith that is confirmed by signs and faith that depends on them?
