Day 42: It Is Finished (John 19:28–37)
“Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”
John 19:30 (NASB)
Jesus has said 'Not yet' across the entire Gospel: at the wedding in Cana (2:4), at the Feast of Tabernacles (7:6, 7:30), across chapters 8 and 10 and 11. The countdown has been running from the Prologue. Now: 'knowing that all was now finished.' He says 'I thirst' — the fifth of His seven words from the cross. The One who promised living water now thirsts. John tells us this was 'to fulfill the Scripture' (Psalm 69:21). Jesus is not merely suffering; He is intentionally fulfilling every line that was written about Him.
They offer sour wine on a hyssop branch — the same plant used to apply the blood of the Passover lamb to doorposts in Exodus 12. Then: 'It is finished.' Tetelestai. In Greek it is both an accounting term (a debt paid in full) and more pointedly a prison term — stamped on a prisoner's record when the sentence was served: 'paid in full, released.' The work Jesus came to do is done. He bows His head and gives up His spirit — no one takes it from Him. He lays it down of His own accord (10:18), in obedience to the Father (14:30–31).
The crurifragium follows — the breaking of legs to hasten death — but Jesus is already dead. A soldier pierces His side; blood and water flow. John testifies to this as an eyewitness: 'He who saw it has borne witness — his testimony is true.' The blood speaks of atonement; the water speaks of the living water promised in 7:37–39. Both flow from the pierced side of the Lamb. Zechariah 12:10 is fulfilled: 'They will look on me, on him whom they have pierced.' Those who look in contrition find salvation; those who look in rejection find deeper condemnation.

- Do you live as though it is truly finished?
- Jesus fulfilled hundreds of specific prophecies in the details of His death. How does the precision of fulfilled prophecy affect your confidence in Scripture?
- Blood and water flowed from His side — atonement and life-giving Spirit. John witnessed it personally. What would it do to your faith to have been standing at the cross?
