Day 26: A Grain of Wheat (John 12:20–50)
“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.”

When the Greeks come seeking Jesus, He speaks about the cross in agrarian terms: 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit' (12:24). Death is the condition of fruitfulness. The one who loves his life loses it; the one who hates his life in this world keeps it for eternal life. The logic inverts every human instinct of self-preservation.
Jesus is 'troubled' — the same word used of His response to Lazarus's death. He does not suppress His humanity: 'Father, save me from this hour' — but immediately corrects Himself: 'But for this purpose I have come to this hour.' A voice comes from heaven. The crowd hears thunder; others say an angel spoke; Jesus says the voice came for their sake. The cross is a judgment on the world, on the ruler of this world, and simultaneously the means of universal drawing: 'And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself' (12:32).
The chapter closes with a sobering assessment: despite all the signs, many did not believe — Isaiah 53 and Isaiah 6 are both quoted. The hardening of hearts was itself prophesied. Yet many among the authorities believed but would not confess it for fear of being put out of the synagogue, 'for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.' The final words of Jesus in His public ministry are a call to believe: He who sees Jesus sees the Father; He did not come to judge the world but to save it. The judgment comes from the word He spoke — and that word will judge on the last day.
