Day 29: I Am the Way (John 14:1–15)
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

The disciples have just been told that Judas will betray Jesus and Peter will deny Him. They are ‘shook.’ Jesus’s opening words are both tender and commanding: ‘Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.’ The antidote to a troubled heart is not information or reassurance — it is belief. And belief is not passive; it is an act of the will directed toward a Person.
The ‘rooms’ of verse 2 (often mistranslated ‘mansions’) are better understood as dwelling places — abiding places. The word connects directly to John’s great theme of abiding (menō). Jesus is going to prepare a place — and He is coming back to take them there. Thomas’s honest confusion — ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ — draws the sixth great ‘I am’ declaration: ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ The early church was called ‘followers of the Way’ (Acts 9:2). Jesus is not merely giving directions; He is the road.
The discourse pivots to the Trinity. If they had known Jesus, they would have known the Father. Philip’s request — ‘Lord, show us the Father’ — echoes the hunger of the entire human race. Jesus’s answer: ‘Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.’ The works He does are the Father’s works, done as He abides in the Father. The command to believe is imperative: ‘Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.’ The works are signs — pointing beyond themselves to who is doing them. The section closes with a promise: ask in His name, and He will do it, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

- Jesus is the Way — not a guide to the way, but the Way itself. What difference does it make that salvation is a Person rather than a program?
- Philip said ‘Show us the Father.’ If you could ask Jesus anything right now, what would it be?
- Jesus told the disciples He was preparing a place for them — that their ultimate home is with Him. How does knowing your eternal destination affect the way you live today?
